Back in November 18, 2007, I challenged everyone to work on improving their Alexa Traffic Rank. Sad to say, there were only two bloggers who responded to the challenge. Today, I’m proud to tell you that in less than 3 months, I managed to break Alexa’s Top 100K. From an Alexa traffic rank of 174700, Blogging Mix is now ranked at 95338. I’m now officially a member of the 5 Digit Alexa Club. Hooray! :D

So, how did I manage to break to Alexa’s Top 100K in less than 3 months? If you’re looking for a quick scheme solution, this post is not for you. Continue reading if you are looking for effective tips to get your blog to Alexa’s Top 100K but will require time and efforts on your part. These tips have worked for my blog and there’s no reason it will not work for you. Here it goes.

1. Install Alexa Toolbar in your internet browser and set your blog as the default URL.

Click here to download Alexa Toolbar if you are using Internet Explorer as your web browser. If you are using Mozilla Firefox, you can download and install Alexa Sparky Add-on.

Once you have successfully downloaded and installed the Alexa Toolbar in your web browser, make sure to set your blog as the default URL. To do this, click on Tools in your menu bar located on top of your internet browser (just below the title bar). From the sub-menu, click on Options. A window will appear where you can set your blog as the default homepage. Click save when you’re done.

2. Install Alexa Widget on your blog.

The next thing you should do is to install Alexa widget on your blog. The Alexa widget comes in different sizes to fit the available space on your blog (120X95, 120X240 and 468X60). You are also given the option to use Alexa Traffic graph. Click here to build your widget and retrieve your code.

Once you’re done customizing your Alexa widget, copy and paste the code in any location on you blog where you wish the Alexa widget to appear. After doing this, you will notice a sudden improvement in your Alexa Traffic Rank in the following days.

3. Ask your family and friends to download and install Alexa Toolbar. Ask them to set your blog as their default homepage.

After I installed Alexa Toolbar in my web browser, I requested my friends and family to do the same. I asked them to use my blog as their default URL as well.

I also downloaded Alexa Toolbar in all the computers in our office and set my blog as the default URL. Of course, I requested permission from my colleagues before doing it.

4. Blog about Alexa Traffic Rank and encourage your blog readers to download and install it on their web browsers.

Your blog readers can help you improve your Alexa traffic rank drammatically, only when they have Alexa Toolbar installed in their web browsers. Alexa only counts visitors to your blog with Alexa Toolbar installed in their web browsers. And by encouraging your blog readers to use it, you’re actually improving your Alexa traffic rank. To do this, you can explain to them through a blog post why they should use Alexa Toolbar. Present to them the benefits of using Alexa Toolbar. Here are the benefits of using Alexa Toolbar.

  • Get rid of those annoying pop ads.
  • Search the web and other resources directly from your toolbar.
  • Learn about Web sites including traffic information and contact information.
  • Surf more efficiently with related links for each page.
  • Share opinions about sites with other users.

5. Join forums and discussions of fellow bloggers and webmasters.

When networking, try to network more with fellow bloggers and webmasters. Alexa is most relevant to them especially if they’re monetizing their blogs so they probably have the Alexa Toolbar installed. Their visits will help you improve your Alexa traffic rank.

When participating in forums and discussions, use you signature and link to your website. Also, start discussions about your posts and link to it. Do this only when it’s allowed by the Terms of Service of the forum you are participating. Here are some of the forums that I regularly participate in.

6. Continue to create quality, relevant and valuable posts for your readers.

Getting people with Alexa Toolbar installed on their web browsers to visit your blog helps improve your Alexa Ranking but getting them to visit your blog regularly is even better. The best way to encourage your visitors to return for another visit is to offer them quality, relevant and valuable posts. Darren over at Problogger made an interesting post on creating a sense of anticipation on your blog, which will help improve the number of your subscribers. More importantly, I believe that anticipation will encourage your blog visitors to return back for updates.

Previously, I posted articles on the benefits of knowing your blog readers and how you can get more information about them. These two posts offer some useful tips on maintaining your blog readers and encouraging them to repeat their visit.

7. Submit and bookmark your posts using social media websites.

Bloggers and webmaster are the frequent users of social media websites so you will have a better chance of getting visitors using Alexa toolbar when you submit your posts on them. Here are some social media sites frequently used by webmasters and bloggers.

Check the comprehensive list of social bookmarking websites I compiled where you can submit your posts for extra exposure and additional traffic.

Additional Tips

You must be wondering why I haven’t included Alexa Redirect as another way to improve your Alexa Traffic Rank. Well, Alexa Redirect does not work.

I emailed the Alexa customer service representatives and ask them about improving my blog’s Alexa traffic rank. I requested for tips and asked if Alexa Redirect works. They came up with a list of ways to improve your Alexa Ranking and didn’t comment on the use of Alexa Redirect. You can read my post on Improving Your Alexa Traffic Rank for the rest of the story.

The blogosphere has a lot of tips on improving your Alexa Traffic Rank. Some offer a quick scheme approach, some will teach you to game Alexa and others will ask you money to help you break into Alexa’s top 100K. You have to be careful when dealing with these types of information. Instead of looking for ways to game Alexa or hack the system, use these legitimate and effective tips to improve your Alexa traffic rank.

There you have it. I hope the tips will help you in improving your Alexa. Don’t forget to share any of the tips I forget to mention. Or feel free to argue that Alexa Redirect works. I would love to hear from you.

Thanks for your time. Happy blogging, and before I forget, Happy Valentines to everyone! :D
