The latest page rank update of Google left Blogging Mix with a BIG FAT ZERO PR. Certainly, doing sponsored reviews and selling my page rank were the main reasons behind Google’s action. From a page rank of 4, Google warned me by down grading my page rank to 3. But I ignored Google so eventually they resorted to taking my page rank away. I tried convincing myself that Page Rank is irrelevant but after experiencing the effects of losing it, I’m now more than convinced that Page Rank is important.

Here are the consequences of losing my Google Page Rank:
- Daily traffic received from Google was affected. Although the decline was minimal, it is still traffic lost.
- Search Engine Rankings on keywords and keyphrases I use to rank high went down. This resulted to a lesser traffic from Google.
- Offers to do sponsored post also went down. This affected my blog income for the month of February and March.
- Some advertisers declined from earlier engagement to advertise on my blog.
- There’s also the psychological impact. The fact that I lost my page rank makes me feel less confident of my blog. Losing my page rank made me feel less credible as a blogger as well.
What I did to get back my Google Page Rank?
After realizing that Google Page Rank still plays a crucial role in blog traffic and blog monetization, I decided to do something to get my Page Rank back. While other bloggers reported that they got their page rank after applying for reconsideration and waiting for 2 months or more, I got back my page rank in less than 1 week. Here’s a list of what I did.
1. I made all the links to my advertisers “NOFOLLOW”.
A ‘DOFOLLOW’ link to your advertisers is a violation of Google’s quality guidelines for webmasters. If you haven’t implemented a ‘NOFOLLOW’ to links to your advertisers, that should be the first thing you should be doing now. Several bloggers reported losing their PR just because they forgot to add a ‘NOFOLLOW’ attribute to their advertisers.
To add a ‘NOFOLLOW’ attribute to the links to your advertisers, all you need is to add rel=”nofollow”. Here’s how you can add the ”NOFOLLOW” attribute to text-link-ad and banner advertisement respectively.
<a rel=”nofollow” href=”http://www.text-link-ads.com/”>ANCHOR TEXT</a>
<a rel=”nofollow” href=”http://www.text-link-ads.com/”><img src=”http://www.bloggingmix.image.jpg”/></a>
Refer to these posts for a more detailed instruction on implementing a ‘NOFOLLOW’ attribute.
- How to add NoFollow to your Wordpress Blogroll links? - This is a useful tip if your blogroll contains text link ads and you want to make the links nofollow.
- Using The Link Relationship Attribute rel=”nofollow” - Contains useful information about functions and roles of the rel=”nofollow”.
- What is a DOFOLLOW and NOFOLLOW? - A useful and informative introduction to dofollow and nofollow. Check the link to understand what these words mean.
2. I implemented a “NOFOLLOW” to all the links in my previous Sponsored Posts. This will apply to any paid reviews I will do in the future.
If you are using Mozilla Firefox with Search Status Plugin installed, you will notice that links to paid sponsored posts were made “NOFOLLOW”. Sponsored Post is not against Google’s quality guidelines provided links are made NoFollow. You can use the same instruction as provided in number 1 if you want to make links to your sponsors nofollow.
3. I applied for RECONSIDERATION.
After all links to advertisers were made NOFOLLOW, I submitted my blog for reconsideration. Here’s step-by-step process to submit your blog for reconsideration.
- Firstly, you need to create an account with Google. If you have a Gmail account, that will do. The same log-in information can be used to access Google Webmaster. If you don’t have a Gmail account, now is the best time to make one.
- Log-in to Google Webmaster using your Gmail Account.
- Once inside your Google webmaster account, you need submit your website if you have not added any. You can also submit your sitemap if you want to take full advantage of Google Webmasters.
- Inside your Google Webmaster account, you will find a link to request for reconsideration at the right side of your screen. Click on it.
- You will be directed to a page where you will be prompted to choose a site that you want to submit for reconsideration.
- Click on the drop button to choose the site you want to submit for reconsideration. Tick on the box to acknowledge that you read and understood Google’s quality guidelines, that the site you’re submitting for reconsideration does not violate Google’s quality guidelines and that you agree to abide by Google’s quality guidelines in the future.
- Just below the reconsideration statement is a form where you can give Google more information about what actions might have led to your penalties, and what corrective actions have you taken.
-  Click on request for reconsideration button to finalize your submission. Now you have to wait and don’t irritate Google by submitting another request for reconsideration.

Tips When Writing Your Message To The Google Review Team
- The Google review team receives thousands of request for reconsideration everyday so don’t make a lengthy letter. Make your points brief and concise.
- Briefly tell Google what might have caused your blog to be penalized, and more importantly, tell Google what were the corrective actions you have done.
- Include URLs or categories of your sponsored posts to make the Review Team’s work easier and faster.
I got my Google Page Rank back so if you do the same thing I did, you should be getting your PR back anytime soon.
Thank you for your time and I hope you found this post useful. ![]()

@ Wakish,

Very helpful post thanks - I need to request it on a few of my sites, but it is a bit misleading isn’t it? You talk about adding ‘nofollow’ to existing links, there’s a very good chance this will be against the terms of any company you sold links/reviews to based on page rank - at the very least those people who paid for you to pass them link juice are no longer getting what they paid for.

Followed your link from Blogcatalog as the subject of King Google and it’s treatment of the serfs is a must know.
I really don’t want to be a party-pooper here but bloggingmix is gray at this moment. Thought maybe it was my pagerank meter so visited a few other sites I know are ranked at least 3 or above. All showed correct rank.
When did Google say they would restore your’s?

One thing I would really like to know about nofollow. Matt Cutts has been asked this question numerous times on his blog and has not answered.
When Amazon (affiliate) links are used in text, should they be nofollowed? Amazon is basically an editorial resource and a legitimate link.
I had been nofollowing them on one of my blogs for several months, and just got hit with some kind of penalty that effectively cut off my Google traffic. My PR of 5 remains the same.

Blogging Mix responded on 17 Mar 2008 at 1:22 pm #
@ Exinco,
I have to reiterate that you should only implement nofollow to links to sponsored posts. I wouldn’t recommend making all your external links NoFollow. Other people would argue that there are SEO advantages of making all your external links NOFOLLOW but that’s not something other bloggers will appreciate.
@ El,
I’m using Lucia’s Link Love wordpress plug-in. It’s Andy Beard’s top recommended ‘dofollow’ plugin. I’m quite satisfied with it as it gives you more protection from spammers. Try it and see for yourself.
@ Starlet,
I would not deny that I violated prior agreement with people whom I sold links to but considering that Google gave me a zero PR, there’s not much juice for them to get anyway. Now that I have my PR 3 back, I couldn’t undo the ‘NOFOLLOW’ attribute I implemented as this will also risk my blog from getting penalized by Google again. This situation calls for a decision and I made my choice. I will still do sponsored posts provided it goes with Google’s quality guidelines.
@Noguru and Simple Mindz,
I’m using Firefox installed with Search Status Plugin and it shows a PR 3. You might want to check it with PR Checker. Since I just got my PR back, most data centers hasn’t been updated yet so it’ll take some times before it appears. Using firefox with search status plugin installed is still the best way to check for websites’ page rank.
@ Malin,
I wish I could have gotten my Page Rank 4 but I should be grateful that at least Google gave me 3. I should work harder to get back pr4 or higher next update.
@ Nspeaks,
You got your PR 4 back and that’s great. I didn’t get my original pr, which is 4, but I’m happy Google gave me 3 at least.
Congrats!
@ Diane,
Good luck. Update us about the developments of your request for reconsideration.
@ Glenn,
Good luck.
I’m not sure about your case as I haven’t used Amazon affiliate on my blog. I’ll give you a heads up when I get some info. If you still have your PR5 but traffic from Google stopped, I’m quite certain you’ve been penalized. Try submitting your request for reconsideration. That might help.

Good for you. But are there any sponsored review firms that allow reviewers to use the nofollow attribute? Most of the review firms that I know emphasize on the removal of the nofollow attribute on outgoing links. But when Google whips you with PR reduction or removal, these firms dump you.
Blogging Mix responded on 19 Mar 2008 at 2:22 pm #
@ Clement,
Whether you should include a nofollow or a dofollow link is up to the one asking for a review. There are lots of offers / opportunities at Sponsored Reviews that do not require you to ‘dofollow’ your links.

My blog PR dropped. I use blogger. I tried implementing what you said but I believe the html formats in Blogger are different than wordpress. Would you recommend any sites that advise on how to change it in blogger? I will be looking myself, but you were so helpful already I thought I would ask. I use a bunch of paid posting sites, but my PR went down on my blog, A Reader’s Eye, and that turned a PR 4 site to a PR 2, and 0 on some sites.
Jacob Malewitz responded on 21 Mar 2008 at 4:33 am #
I think I figured it out. I won’t waste your time with the previous question. Do you think Pay Per Post is against having no follow? I have had little success with Sponsored Review, at least in comparison to the other sites. Think I’ve made, maybe 50 bucks overall, and that’s over six months and tons of submitting for advertisers.
