Uncover Your Market

When selling a product, a lot of people make the mistake of developing their product first, and then trying to find a market for it. Of course, the process should be reversed.

Find a market first that spends money, then find out what they want and give it to them.

It is certainly easier said than done, but there are a lot of places online where you can do your market research for free. They’ve done most of the work for you already. You just need to know where to go and what to do to connect all the dots.

Let me show you the process I go through when I’m trying to brainstorm for ideas.

For starters, I’m always aware of trends and current events in the real world. I read several newspapers each day, many magazines, both general and niche-specific, I watch the news, I listen to the radio. Occasionally something that I hear or read will stick with me. I may record my thoughts on my portable voice recorder; jot down some notes, whatever happens to be convenient for me. Sometimes I’ll call my office voice mail and leave myself a message.

But at some point I’ll have several broad ideas to research. I want to look deeper. And I want to make sure there is a good market for them before I even think about creating a product.

So I’ll begin completing the following steps:

Google Zeitgeist-
http://www.google.com/press/zeitgeist.html

To begin with, I check out the hottest search trends at Google Zeitgeist. If I am targeting the US market, I’ll click on “U.S. Zeitgeist,” otherwise I’ll look at “Zeitgeist Around the World.” At this point I am just looking for ideas.

If I see that a particular topic is hot, I’ll make a note of it and look at more targeted sub-niches later on at more specialized sites (which I’ll show you ).Also check out:

Lycos Top 50 - http://50.lycos.com

The Lycos Top 50 is another site, like Google Zeitgeist, where I will review the latest trends and look for hot topics to explore further. I will also look at Yahoo! Buzz for ideas as well (see below).

Finding Your Niche

How do you find you niche? There are about 8 bazillion possible niches to choose from. No really there are. So how are you supposed to pick one?

Well when I first got into internet marketing I got some advise. Some one told me (and this a pretty well know “guru”) pick something that you like. A hobby for instance. So I followed that advice, and gave it out to others. After a year or so of “working “ niches that I was interested in I came to 1 conclusion. BOY WAS THAT SOME BAD ADVICE!!!!!

Think of it this way, what if there really aren’t that many people interested in what you are. So forget about you interests. If you happen to come across a niche that matches you interests, well great. If not, well you will just have to enjoy spending the money you made anyway.

To really succeed in niche marketing, what you need to find is a hungry market. You need to find a need and then fulfill it. Think of a topic. For now let say health. DO a google search for health forums. Read through them. Find out what questions people are asking. In that you will find you niche.

Now don’t choose the broad topic of health as you niche. Narrow it down. You may find that a lot of people are asking about being tired. Research that some more. Look not only for questions that are being asked, look for questions that are not being answered. That is were you will find your buyers. You want to find people that are desperate to buy your product. The whole point is to fill a void. Otherwise you’re just another product out there.

We’ll take sleep loss as our next example. Go over to over to overture’s key work tool http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/ . You put in some for your key words. We’ll take insomnia for example. 178102 searches on the work in Dec. 2006. Now that’s a big market. You will also see other searches listed below. You will want to note those key words. They come in handy for SEO.

Now don’t be scared if there a lot of competing sites. It’s not a real niche if there is no competition.

What is Niche Marketing

So, what exactly is Niche Marketing? Everyone has heard the buzz word “Niche Marketing”. Basically if you are selling something, you are in niche marketing. In simple terms a “niche” is just a topic.

For example “Work At Home” is a niche. It’s a very broad one, but still a niche. Another example would be “Health Products”. Any topic is really a niche. There are no excesses for not finding a niche.
The power of niche marketing lies in you audience. You can do all the SEO and marketing tricks that you know, but if you don’t capture your target audience, you just waste a bunch of time and money (but we will go into that more later).
So the whole point of this blog is to equip you with all the knowledge you will need to be a success in niche marketing.

There is a lot of money to be made in niche marketing. Now, it’s not for everyone.

  • If you are looking to make 1000’s of dollars a month and not be willing to put in any work, well this blog is not for you.
