Importance Of Diversifying Your Sources Of Blog Traffic

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usIn business, diversification means allocating your investment among a variety of assets. Diversification is a strategic approach that helps reduce risk because different investments will fluctuate independent from each other. The combinations of these assets more often than not will cancel out each other’s fluctuation, therefore resulting to the reduction of risk.

In blogging, the same principle of diversification can be applied to traffic. In today’s post, I will be discussing three core issues relating to blog traffic, namely;

  1. The sources of blog traffic.
  2. Why the need to diversify our sources of traffic?
  3. And how can we diversify it?

Sources of Blog Traffic

When we speak of online traffic, we refer to the number of visits to your website on a given period of time. While traffic in the real world is abhored and avoided by people, traffic online is valuable such that some bloggers/webmasters are willing to do just anything to drive more traffic to their websites.

Generally, there are two categories of traffic; paid traffic and free traffic. These sources are further classified into search engine traffic, traffic from advertisements and traffic from other websites.

Traffic from search engines is generated when pages of your website are included in their index and appear on strategic locations in their result page. SEO or search engine optimization is the product of recognizing the importance of search engines in bringing traffic to a website. Considered by many as the most valuable and best in quality, search engine traffic remains to be the major source of blog traffic.

Paid traffic on the other hand are traffic generated from paid advertisements like PayPerClick and banner ads. Adwords and Overture are some examples of companies that provide paid traffic.

Another source of traffic is traffic from other websitesThis is generated when other sites link to your pages, hence giving you free advertisement. This kind of traffic includes traffic from social bookmarking / networking websites, directories and other related sites. You can read my post on “Blog Traffic For Beginners” for a more thorough discussion of the sources of blog traffic.

Why The Need To Diversify Traffic?

Diversifying your traffic sources enables your blog to continue receiving traffic in case one of your sources encounters a problem. Imagine if you rely entirely to Google for traffic, then all of a sudden, Google altered its algorithm. Or for some reasons, Google banned your website from its database. Where will you get traffic now? Losing traffic is an online marketer’s worst nightmare as it could mean the beginning of the end of your online business.

Diversifying your traffic sources helps improve your traffic quality and will result in an increase in traffic in the long run. Let’s assume that all your traffic are coming from Entrecard. Given the nature of Entrecard and its users, your blog will probably end up with a high bounce rate. But by diversifying your blog traffic, you will be able to offset your high bounce rate with your traffic from other sources like search engines.

Diversifying your source of traffic will help expose your blog to a wider and a new audience. Your new audience can be a great source of fresh ideas and perspectives for your blog. They are also potential business partners who can help you to promote your blog resulting to an increase in your blog traffic.

Lastly, diversifying your source of traffic makes you less dependent to your sources, which gives you more freedom and control over your blog. Bloggers who heavily rely for traffic from Google tend to be constrained by Google’s policies, which is often times limiting their earning potentials.

How To Diversify Traffic?

Diversifying your sources of traffic might be a time-consuming task but a rewarding one. Here are some ideas that will help you diversify your source of traffic.

Use social networks and bookmarking sites.

Digg, StumbleUpon and Reddit are just a few examples of social bookmarking sites that can help bring traffic to your blog. Previously, I compiled the largest list of social bookmarking sites where you can submit your posts for extra publicity and additional traffic.

Optimize your blog for other search engines.

Google may be the largest search engine but it’s not the only one. In fact, a large number of online surfers also use Yahoo, MSN and Ask. You can start optimizing your blog for these search engines to accumulate a more diversified traffic from search engines. You can watch the Search Engine Optimization Video to undestand how to optimize your blog for search engines.

Start your own group and community.

If you don’t belong to any group or community, it’s about time you find some to join. Communities and groups are great sources of support and traffic for your blog. I have 3 groups at Blogcatalog (Bloggers and Blogging, Entrecard and Alexa) and all of them have been helpful in building my readership. I recommend you to join BlogCatalog, MyBlogLog and Bumpzee. To get the most out of these communities, you should become an active member.

Start networking with other bloggers.

Making friends with other bloggers is an effective strategy to promote your blog. Most of my buddies online have been very helpful in the promotion of my blog. They link to my blog from their sidebar or from their posts, which is not only good for Google Page Rank and Technorati but it’s also a potential source of traffic.

Consider buying traffic.

If you have the financial resources, you might want to consider buying traffic from services like Adwords or StumbleUpon. I’ve used StumbleUpon before to drive traffic to my blog and I’m quite satisfied with the result. John Chow, despite the heavy traffic he receives everyday, is still using Adwords to drive some more traffic to his blog. There are a lot of available cheap advertising online to choose from. You might want to check Entrecard and Project Wonderful for some really cheap advertisements. Besides, their are always bloggers offering 125X125 banner ads for a very cheap cost.

What other ways can be done to diversify blog traffic? Share your recommendations through the comment. :D

How To Get Google Crawl Your Website - Part II

Here’s the second part of the series of blogging tips to help you get Google crawl your website. It is recommended that you take a look at the first part of this series before reading the rest of this post.

google crawl, google robots, pinging, social bookmarking site

So what else can be done to get Google to crawl your website faster and more frequently? Here are the rest of the blogging tips you can implement to ensure that Google crawls your website.

1. Submit your posts to ’DOFOLLOW’  Social Bookmarking Website.

Google crawls the web by following links from one website to another but in this case, Google gives priority over websites with higher Google page rank.  A good way to get Google to crawl your website is to earn links from sites with high Google page rank. The good news is, there are several social bookmarking websites with page rank as high as 9, that implement ‘DOFOLLOW’ in their links. Here are some of the ’DoFollow’ social bookmarking websites.

For more ‘DoFollow’ Social Bookmarking websites, check out the list compiled by Stephan over at StephanMiller.com. Recently, I made a compilation of the largest list of social bookmarking websites where you can submit your post for extra publicity and additional traffic. Check the list and start submitting your best posts. Just don’t spam their system or it will back fire.

2. Get yourself a reliable web host.

Google’s crawling rate can be negatively affected by a slow server. It is therefore useful that you avail of the services of a reliable web host provider with fast servers. Fast servers are ‘Google robot friendly’ as it facilitates crawling faster and easier. This will help you win Google’s favor.

3. Make ‘Pinging’ a habit every after new content is added to your blog.

Ping your site every time you have made a new post on your blog. This helps your site become more visible to spiders and makes your site faster to index. Pinging does not only inform Google robots that you have added new contents but it also lets other websites know that you have updated your site. Moreover, pinging also has the potential to bring more visitors to your blog.

pinging, pingoat, pinging services, ping

Here are the most common websites used by bloggers to ping everytime they update.

Take note that you don’t need to use all of the above pinging sites. Simply choose one and stick to it. Using all of them will only result to spamming and might result to getting your website banned.

Most of blog softwares, like Wordpress, has the ability to ping on their own. In this case, you don’t need to ping everytime you add a new content on your blog as your platform does it automatically for you.

There you have it, the remaining blogging tips you can implement to get Google to crawl your website. What else can you do to get Google crawl your website? Any other blogging tips you might want to include in the list?

Thank you for your time. Happy blogging everyone! :D

How To Get Google Crawl Your Website - Part I

Google crawls millions of websites on a daily basis to update its database and return fresher contents to its users. Considering that Google crawls millions of websites  everyday, it should be worthwhile giving Google a hand.

google crawl, google page rank, google robot

Getting your blog crawled by Google frequently improves your blog traffic as Google index more and more of your new pages. Also, the frequency of Google crawling your website is an indication of its value and importance. The more valuable and important a website is, the more often Google crawls it.

Today, I will be sharing Part-I of the blogging tips on how you can get Google to crawl your website and how do you make it to crawl more often.

Tips To Get Google Crawl Your Website

Here’s a list of useful blogging tips that will help you get Google crawl your website.

1. Create a Sitemap.

A Sitemap is a page which contains an organized listing of links to all pages within your website. The main function of a sitemap is to help search engines to better crawl and index the pages of your blog. Hence, sitemap comes handy to those who want to optimize their blogs for search engines.

Wordpress users can easily create a sitemap for their blog using the different available Sitemap plug-ins. The more popular plug-ins are XML Sitemap by Arne Brachhold and Sitemap Generator Plug-in by Dragon Design. Both sitemap plugins are free and are easy to install.

For Blogger users, the Atom.XML that Blogger provides can be used as your sitemap. You can access it by simply adding /atom.xml to your domain. (i.e. http://bloggingmix.blogspot.com/atom.xml). What you should do with your sitemap is what’s more important, which is to submit it to Google!

2. Submit your sitemap to Google Webmasters.

Now that you have your sitemap, the next thing you need to do is submit it to Google Webmasters. If you have a Gmail account, you can use it to gain automatic access to Google Webmasters. Once inside your account, you first need to add your website (not your sitemap).

add your sitemap, atom.xml, google webmaster tool

After you have added your website, you need to do two things. First, you should verify that the website you submitted is yours. You can do this by simply adding a meta tag in your blog. After you verified that the blog belongs to you, you can now submit your sitemap.

submit sitemap, sitemap xml, atom xml

2. Submit your website to Google.

Google is inviting you to submit your URL and get included in their index. Although submitting your URL to Google does not guarantee your inclusion to their index, it’s a good start. CLICK HERE to submit your URL to Google. Make sure you take time to read the instructions and reminders provided in the submission page.

4. Link to your sitemap from your homepage.

Your homepage is the most visible page of your blog to your visitors including search engine robots. Therefore, linking to your sitemap from your homepage makes it easier for search engines to find and index it.

5. Submit your blog to relevant directories.

Google encourage bloggers to submit their blogs to relevant directories like the Open Directory Project. Submitting your blog to directories help Google to discover your page and helps improve your page rank. Previously, I compiled 2 lists of directories with good Google Page Rank where you can submit your blog for free without the need for a reciprocal link. (First 50 Directories + Another 50 Directories) Other than submitting your website to free directories, you can also join forums, submit articles to article directories, comment on ‘dofollow blogs’ or become a guest blogger.

6. Work on improving your Google Page Rank.

Websites with higher Page Rank are visited by Google more often than websites with lower PR. It is therefore useful that you work on improving your Google page rank to get Google crawl your website more often, which can result to an increase in your traffic. To improve your page rank, you need to earn more inbound links to your websites. You can also improve your Google page rank by submitting your blog to relevant directories as explained in tip number 5.

7. Update your website content frequently.

Google has officially announced that a website with more content updates will be crawled more often by Google robots. It is therefore important to regularly update your blog content without compromising the quality of your posts. For the same reason, expect to see regular posts here at Blogging Mix.

What else can you do to get Google to crawl your website more often? Check out tomorrow’s post as I share and discuss more blogging tips that will help you to get Google to crawl your website.

Thank you for your time. :D
