I believe that being reciprocal in most social bookmarking activities - I SU you if you SU me and sort of things - has really gone artificial.

And artificial is not a good thing in real blogging world, because you deal with real people, not artificial ones.

I did the same mistake when I was very new to blogging, but later on when you get along the road, you see things much better Reciprocal links affects your blog badly..

There is nothing wrong in doing reciprocal links but you have to do it smartly. Do a 3-way link instead of the normal reciprocal links done by those who didn’t know sh*t about SEO.

Remember, there is always a way to fool search engines.

It is annoying to me because it is troublesome in the 1st place.Well,i will prefer to build up a strong rapport with bloggers as much i can,then i will exchange link with each other.It will increase number of backlinks,it takes time to do that .But i will have a big impact in long term basis.

It is against policies of google. But the way I see it another reason why it isn’t so beneficial is because I kind of look at it as if the links cancel each other out, because in a sense… they do. The more links pointing to your page the better… but if your pages are all pointing to the same amount of pages then you will get penalized for sure.

Maybe they have the least benefit in SEO, but I think they still has their own use.

Reciprocal links can still attract human readers.
Especially if there are “mother teresa” a-list blogger who wants to help blogger noobs gain new readers through their blogroll.

Me personally, I put reciprocal links on their own page and keeping them below certain amount. Although I’m not expecting them to increase my SERP, but at least I got more exposure on other blogs.

I do agree that submitting to blog directories, and comments on do follow blogs are effecient ways to build back links, but an occasional reciprocal link is not detrimental either.
