Sometimes there are little flashes of proof that I might know what I am talking about.
About a month ago I posted a hole in our PageRank strategy that I thought was draining some of the authority Google gives our site (see nofollow and improving PageRank). I made the changes (knowing that early April was the next update), and every major page on our site has been bumped to PageRank 5 on the toolbar.
For those that say the visible PageRank is just a snapshot, it does make a difference when selling ads, and it does make a difference in the eye of a large portion of your site audience, so you should try and get that little green bar as high as you can.
If you read this and have no idea what PageRank is, here’s an overview.

So merely by effective use of the no-follow attribute you managed to bump up your PageRank from 4 to 5 on your major pages. Great stuff, and it sure does prove that there is definite merit in using the no-follow attribute to sculpt your PR.
I’m still learning about no-follow stuffs. Reading a posting like this really help me much. Wish you keep writing good articles. Now I’m going to continue exploring this blog. Thanks man!
Increasing your google PR isn’t easy. And many bloggers do know the secret. Nothing but backlinking i think.
But then doesn’t that mean that pagerank is increasing by other means than the quality of content on a blog?

Quality doesn’t have much to do with it (directly). It’s all about the number of links to a particular page. By no-following pages that don’t need pagerank (like your contact or about us page) you can ensure pages keep the “juice” Google is assigning them.
Thanks for the share.. I usualy use no-follow for external sites but using nofollow for your own content is a good idea… but if you are a blog writter that is probably good to actually link to your other blog posts…
It’s always about Google. Getting back-links are great ways to get your site high in the search engines. We all wish that it would be so simple, but thats Internet Marketing for ya.

No follow link is must to get all the link juice to your site or else your page rank juice will be shared by all linking to it.

It can be a very difficult situation, knowing that you’re going to go up against generations of salesmanship that go back years and have perfected the art of the car selling trying to take every penny you have.

I have previously used the nofollow tag to prevent PR from going to unimportant pages. It definitely is a good idea. In fact I should probably have a good look over my sites again to make sure that more nofollow links can’t be added. PR itself isn’t important to me, but I sure what some better Google search rankings.

Yeah I think it is definitely important to take a look at your website and add nofollow tags to webpages that really should not be given any point of ranking on the web, and especially the web-pages that may include duplicate content, such as the “contact page” and privacy policy page to name a few.
Till then,

This is so true. I feel that while page rank may not be important to some, it’s very important to potential advertisers. And just making changes – even small ones to pages can help – but also adding new content to the site is one of the best ways to improve rankings in PR and in the search engines.

No follow is something I knew about in theory but have never used them myself. When I make a proper website (and stop using silly little blogspot) I’ll be sure to use them. Thanks for the post.

Hey WDW,
Managing the nofollow links and gaining pagerank sounds impressive. I think this will help out me in gaining the pagerank that I am desiring out of my blog.
Thanks for sharing this information.
