No I did not make a typo in the title.
ABG = Always be Growing
I meet a lot of people who have started websites, but expect that once it’s on the Internet, “the Internet” will grow it. Sadly, “the Internet” is a series of core routers that co-operate to send streams of data between networks using common routing protocols; it is not going to automatically promote and grow your site.
What you do with your business once it’s on the web, defines the level of success you’ll see. Looking at the successes I’ve had, they have all come from experimentation, and exploration of new ideas. When we’re talking about this site specifically, sometimes it’s easy to think “well, we’ve got a lot of features, lets sit back for a bit and see what happens.” That usually lasts about a day before we think of something new to try and we’re off working on another idea. Why? ABG.
If you’re not gettin’ busy growing, you’re gettin’ busy dying.
Barriers to entry on the web are next to nothing. If your earnings, traffic, membership, or content is at a plateau, it’s time to remember your ABG’s and get to work. I’ve mentioned in many other posts the importance of a strong mission statement. You can read ours here. If you were too lazy to click the link, a big part of it is …To become the Internets largest and most trusted telecommuting and work at home website.. Is there any way to do that other than to Always Be Growing?
Nope.

True. Sometimes I expect those search engine visitors to come by themselves and relying too much on Google.
I forgot that I need to do some hard work myself

Well getting onto search engine requires lots of hardwork too.
Well Michael, in a perfect world yes, we could just make a website, and the search engines would rank us truly based on our qualities, but the reality is the Internet World we live in, we have to do work to get those rankings.
It kinda of funny how having a website on the internet, can also relate to having a business outside in the real world. In the real world… if you are not out there actively promoting and improving, and “always growing” your business, you will never get any where and you can bet your bottom dollar that the business will fail, and the same in my opinion applies to have your business online.

Yup, totally agree with you on this one. If you put your energy, time, money, and heart into it, it will always shine (well, almost always)

That is absolutely wonderful advice and as true as it gets! You always need to be doing something to grow your online business or it will die off. You might get to a point where it runs on autopilot but after a while you will still need to get more links, add more content, etc… to keep it at its current level.

I agree with all the points above. Internet marketing is a slippery slope. If you stop progress you will slide down in the rankings and your competitors will pass you by. You always need to be moving forward…adding new content, building new links or adding new site features. A website is never really truly complete. There will always be some way you can improve the website, its search engine rankings or its traffic.

Great thoughts – instead of the web – it should be called the ocean – always ebbing and flowing.
True words….if you stagnate, you die. That pretty much sums up the world of the internet. It is a dog eat dog world (just like the real one) and giving up your advantage will cause you to flounder!
Great information. The old concept of ‘if you build it they will come’ is out the door. Marekting is key and it is all about getting traffic – either foot traffic or online users. Then, once there – these customers must find something of use – either products or information.
“If you’re not gettin’ busy growing, you’re gettin’ busy dying.” This is definitely a true statement. If you want your webpage to grow you do have to put the effort into it and grow it yourself, as you are right in that many people wrongly believe the internet will do it for them. Yes ABG is a valiant and worthy principle that is necessary if you want your site to gleam, and ABG is quite cleverly named, I must say.
Till then,
Jean
I have to admit that I was to lazy to click the link so I’m glad that you copied some of your statement
Growing your business if definitely one important part of is and as some have already said, finding a way to implement some kind of automation (or outsourcing) is also an important part of it. I would be a sad thing to end up with a great money making online business that had you working 16 hours a day just to keep up.

Yes you always have to grow and find out what works best for you. It is real important that you are learning each and every day!

I’m trying to do this ABG thing but have so many routes to follow I get easily distracted; doing bits of lots of things, it’s not as though I don’t make the effort. My site is I think unique, so I’ve tried press releases to little or no avail. I’ve blogged, twittered and commented but it’s very slow.

Over 90% of businesses fail.
I think that most fail because owners give up before they have a chance to succeed. There’s no such thing as an overnight success. Keep at it!
Those are true words, but quite often lack of cashflow is the issue, and other things have to be taken on to compensate, leaving your project neglected, and ultimately a failure. Inadequate cashflow is the single biggest obstacle to success in my opinion.
“If you’re not gettin’ busy growing, you’re gettin’ busy dying.”
Totally true.
Actually in whatever business you do, constant effort will bring you a long long way.
The secret is sucess : NEVER GIVE UP.
At the begining it can be hard, but for exemple I now make more then 3000$ per month, I started at a few bucks per day,I never gave up !
Good luck to everyone!

Always Be Growing is a very prudent motto. Never get complacent because the only thing in this world that doesn’t change is the fact that everything changes.

Good points you make there. If you’re not constantly evolving and trying to stay ahead of the game, you’ll never be better than middle of the pack. Making money in anything takes hard work. If you’re going to do the minimum to affect your SEO, just add quality content regularly and your site should grow.

Yep – persistence and hard work are the key.
I have noticed that one reaps the benefits sooner or later.
We can not afford to be static if the Net is so dynamic.
Good points you make there. Search engine requires lots of hard work too.
This is one of the foundations my company was built upon. No matter what, if you’re forcing growth, you’re trying new things and diversifying your efforts for success.
Interesting post. One thing I’ve learned, is to apply the ABG philosophy to your business network. I’ve attended a lot of network meetings over the past few years (check out Meetup.com to find a local business network event in your city), and the people I’ve met along the way have really contributed to the success of my business. If you are not continually expanding the network of business people, you may be missing out on potential business parters, or even customers!
For me networking is the key to ABG, people are the key to business, new people=new business!
I rely heavily in google (not proud of it but is the truth) but the other day i read about the new google (the beta version) and i realize that i am not working for any company, but relying solely on google is the closest thing, if they change their algorythm by any chance i can be out of a job/income soon… what other techniques do you recomment besides relying on search engine results?
get more hooks out there: We use wordpress plugins and firefox addons to secure our ‘reach’ on the web. With MSFT Bing going to be powering Yahoo! search soon, it would be worthwhile to optimize for Bing as well as Google.
I am working on developing themes for wordpress to get more hooks out there, also trying to get listed in bing, thanks for your advice!
you’re on the right track! keep it up
Hey WDW,
I agree with you that to grow over internet is like living. When you keep on growing you be in the eyes of the people, people starts to notice you and this is where your future readers database lies.
People always follow the one who keeps on growing and have something new to show and tell. Stagnation is a stigma both online and offline for anything.
