I’ve gotten 5 separate inquires this week from people checking to see if a “Rey Davis” or “Cathy Danels” work at WhyDoWork.com. It appears they have been running a data entry scam that operates like this:
- They have a posting on a freelance site saying they are from WhyDoWork and they are looking for data entry help.
- Excited to get a job, people reply.
- They are told that they are hired, but to start work they need the appropriate software.
- They deal with “Cathy Danels” who tries to get them to buy a suite of products (including Microsoft office) with a *catch*
- The products must be purchased from someone on their staff, and you need to send $235 via Western Union to:
Penny Colson
City : Pt. Townsend
State : WA
Zipcode : 98368 - The candidates are told to check out whydowork.com as a check that the job and their company is legit
As we are probably the largest legitimate work at home job search engine on the web, it can be easy to believe the posting. I’m glad five people came forward to let us know of the scam. I’m hoping no one got taken in by it.
As a word of caution, both “Rey Davis” ( ray.davis85@yahoo.com) and “Cathy Danels” (cathydanels@yahoo.com) have emails at yahoo.com. A pretty good rule of thumb is that if someone is going to hire you, their email will definitely be from the company doing the hiring (i.e. someone@whydowork.com).
Keep your eyes peeled for these scammers, hopefully some spam bots will come by and find their email addresses appealing.

Scammers make me sick! Why can’t people just do business ethically like most of us?!
That is just nasty, preying on people who are already in financial need. Scammers and Spammers are the bane of the internet world. Now how can we virtually execute them?

If someone doesn’t have a legit work at home or telecommuting job to offer then why even waste their time trying to trick and scam people! Pathetic! I hate scammers!
I can’t believe anyone would be silly enough to fall for this, but the more publicized these scams become, the higher the risk the scammers will be rewarded justly for their crap, like a sharp stick in the eye.

I hate spammers! However, it indeed shows that you have a kinda standard that some nasty people are trying to misuse it. You have credibility among your readers. It’s a great, appreciable & rare positioning indeed! I know, you will handle it successfully as well.
Oh how sad. Scammers are really disgusting. I hope it wont happend again.
Unforunately we will always have those who wish to take advantage of people in desperate need. All we can do is be diligent in reporting them. Thanks for your post on this matter.
Thank you for publishing this warning. I am a stay at home mother of 3 trying to make ends meat and if I would not have come across this I would have made a HUGE mistake!
Well, if there are people who are scammed, I would say they are very naive. They should have known this just by looking at the emails they have been contacted through. It is anyhow very good on your part to warn the people about the scam.
I agree that people would have to be naive to fall for most scams, but it isn’t necessarily their fault. Just because someone is new to the internet do they deserve to be stolen from? The reason this scam works is because it is targeting people who are desperately looking for work. When your emotions are triggered, it is quite easy to overlook big warning signs.

It is amazing how low scammers will stoop. They don’t care who’s toes they’re stepping on in their attempt to make a buck. These people must truly have no conscience. Thanks for letting us all know about this scam.
Have you guys made any further progress in making these scamsters responsible for their actions? What are your rights in a case such as this one? Maybe a follow-up blog post on the subject might be in order?
Thanks for the heads up about this scam. At least you found out about this scam and were able to warn your visitors. I’m sure there are many other similar scams where the website owner has no idea. Hopefully not many people were scammed.

I hate scammer! You know I get scammed by someone in the past when I first knew about online thingy, that was my first time and the only time I get scammed. Don’t worry, god will penalize them for their rude action!

Yes I like to assume that their bad actions will somehow come back to them. When you have no conscience, bad karma is bound to come back to you.
