A few weeks ago we decided to take a closer look at a reputation system for members at WhyDoWork. After much thought, we settled on a simple (+)(-) for all posts in the forums. If members want to show their appreciation or alternatively distaste for a particular post, they can click either button.
Letting this system run for a while, we implemented a graphing feature to track member reputation. Here’s a graph of the top users in the last week:
To celebrate this feature, we’re holding a contest starting today and running until next Sunday at 7pm EST. We’ll be tracking the users with the most positive Karma score for the period of one week. Prizes for top members include:
- 8GB Apple iPod touch
- $100 gift certificate at Amazon.com
- $75 gift certificate at Amazon.com
- $50 gift certificate at Amazon.com
- $25 gift certifcate at Amazon.com

This contest sounds like a great idea to ensure quality comments get voted to the top while the spammy stuff gets voted down. Any chance of implementing this system on the blog? Please?
wow, some good prizes. I used to hang around in the blog, probably this is the best time to get into the forum. My iPod is a 3 years old one, I wish if i can win the top one..
A reputation system is a great idea for a forum feature. This gives an incentive for people to participate in a positive way on the forum. The graph is also a great idea to see how quickly the top users get their karma. Great work guys!

I agree, great prize choices. The amazon gift cards are extremely flexible as there is so much you can buy with them. An ipod touch would be pretty damn sweet too.

Hiya Ravi! The voting system is for the WDW forum, and not for the blog. I think a similar system for blogs in general will be a good idea so the blog’s community can identify and vote off spammers. This will of course lead to other forms of abuse again. It’s just one big vicious circle, isn’t it! Spam is the bane of the internet world, and finding ways to combat it effectively is a whole business sector in it’s own right.
Also someone else here commented that this application will help keep spam comments out. I dint understand how this is related to comments.
I think the rating only applies to the posts and not actual comments in any way.
Sounds like a great contest, so the contest will be started in Whydowork Forums instead of this blog? WDW, are you going to organize a similar contest in this blog for your blog follower too?
