I’d say that working with and for good people is one of the most important factors. There’s nothing better than finding people that you have good rapport with, and mutual respect.

If someone knows that you are giving a good service and appreciates what you do, they are more likely to keep giving you work. And off course you’re more likely to work hard for them.

This is crucial because obviously regular clients are vital for business success.

That is a great idea. Previously we’ve used Elance.com quite a bit for outsourcing, but I like the idea of holding a contest better. That way you get multiple design options for the price of one.

How do you find participation using that strategy? Are designers willing to work banking on the chance they will be chosen?

I agree with a lot in this post. And yes, the amount of outsourcing one wants all comes down to the amount one NEEDS. One route I have always taken when outsourcing any web design needs is Sitepoint. You can hold a contest there and then choose from many multiple entries for design, etc. That way you are not just stuck with one(should you not like it). It is a little form of ‘group sourcing’.

This is a very worthwhile blog. I am glad I came across it!

Hey Trav: Outsourcing all depends on where you need help and what your budget allows. If you have no design skills and your blog layout is ugly you could pay an expert like Nate Whitehil to redesign it for you. You could hire an advertising agency to handle your marketing if you are clueless in that area. It’s even reasonable to hire a blog writer if you are a terrible writer but strong in the other areas.
