To quickly answer the question I’d have to say no, but stick around and let me tell you why!
When Facebook announced their new advertising format I had to give it a try. With the huge user base they already have and the relatively cheap cost to distribute (I paid $30 to send 15,000 flyers to groups of college students) I thought it would be a good experiment to see how well college kids respond to ads focussed on part time work online.
Setting up Your Ad
As with everything else on the site, this is extremely easy to do. You can start by visiting here and constructing your ad. You will be given a live preview as you construct your advertisement which will look something like this:

As you can see they are fairly basic but will be placed in prominent location on your audiences profiles. I can’t speak for Flyers Pro, which is structured so you only pay per click, but my trial with the regular version was a snap to set up and took less than 10 minutes.
Choosing Your Target Audience
Facebook allows you to target specific countries, sexes, schools, and networks. If you’re going to be advertising to those looking to make money online, I’d advise choosing a few universities or colleges that you know offer technology and IT programs.
Sit Back and Wait for the Traffic
Once you’re done making your ad and choosing your audience, you can pay for your flyer. Prices are extremely cheap ranging from $5 for 2,500 flyers all the way to $200 for 100,000 flyers. For my test I went with 15,000 flyers for $30. Without further adieu here’s the results:
15 clicks on 15,000 impressions. I’ve done quite a bit of advertising online and 0.09% is probably my most disappointing click through rate of all time. The flyer created was well written and targetted and I was expecting more from Facebook.
I did have a hunch that the click through rate would be dismal just from what I’ve heard about advertising on Facebook in general. According to Valleywag.com, Facebook is the worst performing site for advertisers online. In a report they received, the average click through rate was presented as 0.04%, meaning that for every 1,000,000 impressions you order you’re going to get 400 clicks.
Looks like I more than doubled the average.
I’d think twice about advertising on Facebook as there are quite a few more cost effective ways to spend your advertising dollars. If you have given them a try, paste your click through rate in a comment. I’d be interested in seeing what kind of results others have been getting.

Click through: 0.004% – .138%
Looks like I’m not the only one who had poor results
Wow! The CTR you got on your experiment is a bit eye-opening, to say the least! Maybe we will put the idea of advertising on Facebook on the back burner for the time being.
Thanks for that timely and insightful article!
I had a suspicion it would be poor before I started. For a company that large $150 million / yr in revenue is peanuts.
I had also heard from friends in the advertising industry (who’ve purchased 6 figure amounts on the site) that the clickthrough rates they were getting for clients were terrible and that Facebook never gets repeat business.
I bet their new SocialAds Network (http://www.google.com/search?q=socialads+facebook) will change all that soon
Thanks for the link to my results – as you say, I got poor CTRs too!! Here’s hoping that their SocialAds network (due for release on 6th November I hear) will be an improvement.

Ok we were thinking about advertising on Facebook, but having read the above at first I wasn’t so sure….but then having a further think about it…perhaps it may be worth taking your trial on step further. Ok stick with me on this one…if you did a set amount of leaftets for $30 (15,000 was it?) and you got a really low click through rate on a one hit leaflet drop then would that not suggest that it would be cost effective to run a longer pay per click ad campaign? Here’s my reasonings, you’d have a low click through rate so the actual ad it’s self is not going to cost that much to run, plus even if people didn’t click through on your ad you’ve got a “background” almost subliminal presence on Facebook haven’t you? They are going to see your ad there for longer without you running the risk of loads of people clicking through on it…does this make sense or am I totally wide of the mark??
Would it be worth perhaps running a test trial of pay per click ads on Facebook and see how much longer your advertsing stands for on the site before you reach the same $30 spend on click throughs?
Perhaps it may work out you get more ad for your money that way?
Cheers

Hey Freya,
That would be true if you were interested in having a campaign purely for branding purposes.
In this case I wanted all 15,000 people to click. ( i was paying $30 for 15,000 flyers regardless of how many people clicked.)
I agree that a PPC test on Facebook would be a good test to see which was more effective. My hunch is that 30$ of PPC click ads would take a lot more than 15,000 impressions!
wow I didn’t know the click through rate was so poor, I might do my own experiment to backup your results.
I can see why because the facebook ads are very small and in proportion to the number of links on the page the adverts link again is small. I’m not sure if I’ve ever clicked a link.
hi,
I was about also to have my ads displayed in facebook… fortunately i stumbled on your site…..thanks for sharing your experience with them. it’s nice to know people who honestly and fearlessly share their experience in the service they have subscribed…
keep it up..
Thanks!
I’m usually pretty honest with what works and what doesn’t
Thank you for this mate. I won’t consider facebook anymore for advertising.
I read another similar post about paid advertising on stumbleupon, and results were close to facebook.
I would like to publish my flyer on facebook but not sure and needs some answers please
Is it free?
How much would cost me?
can i pay monthly?
flyers are not free, you determine how much you want to spend, yes you can pay monthly.
