I had a chance this weekend to take the new and long awaited Alexa plug-in for Firefox for a spin and I’ll admit I’m thoroughly impressed. Gone is the old toolbar which took up valuable real estate and offered little value with its suggested links. Kudos to the people at Alexa for coming up with something that is unobtrusive and useful at the same time.

I’ve always been a supporter of Alexa because I think its great to collect information on how the Internet is used. It takes away some of the mystery of what’s going on and makes the Internet feel a little less like a black hole. Alexa is only as strong as its user base so if you’re a Firefox user, give it a whirl - it may surprise you. If you own your own website, installing it should give you a boost to your rankings :D. Alexa rankings have recently been dismissed as fluff, but sites like AuctionAds and Text-Link-Ads still determine the advertising price on your site via your Alexa ranking. If the Firefox toolbar picks up some steam, they may just return to the limelight as the authority on what sites matter on the web today!
