I was taking a little break yesterday and surfing some of the regular blogs I read when I came across a post on the blog of Jason Calacanis regarding Social Networking Exhaustion. Personally I’m a big believer that most things I do on the Internet should bring some value, and i’m starting to think that this exhaustion may open the door to a new business.
Jason questions why he is even using these social networking sites. I think thats a fair question that everyone should be asking. I also find it time consuming to maintain all my real friends, and on top of that i’m now expected to maintain all my e-friends (friends who I would communicate with online but don’t have the time or energy to meet up with outside of the Internet).
Internet communication is so casual that it has been easy to maintain thus far, but as we get more and more entrenched in social networking sites I do agree with Jason that having a “Facebook Gardener” isn’t that far fetched.
It may seem laughable that you would have someone send out greeting cards and write a few wall posts a week on your behalf, but really is that any different than having an Executive Assistant send out birthday cards to employees and taking care of a few customer notifications?
If the popularity of social networks continue, I’d say a market will emerge where freelance employees can be paid to maintain the social networks of their employers.
What do you think?
Love to write more but I have 8 friend requests, 4 birthday cards to send, and a never ending stream of wall posts to reply to. ![]()
