Which I suppose is better than it not working, but it keeps restarting itself like it has a life of its own. I've run virus scans. What would make it do that?

I've had mine refuse to shut off, but never restart itself. If you've saved and closed everything, maybe you'll have to unplug it, wait 20 or 30 seconds and then reboot and see if it still does it. Sometimes, I have to remove the battery from my laptop because it acts up, then it's okay again.

Last night I shut it down AND turned the powerbar off and when I turned it on this morning, boom, it started right up. I think there's a program that's hanging but I don't know how to fix it. I tried doing a system restore but it didn't make any difference. (I think it's watching me right now )

You poor thing! This sounds like a job for a pro. I used to know somebody in Woodstock who did that sort of thing, but it's been too long, don't remember the name anymore.

I have to say that I admire how you kept your sense of humour. When my 'puter acts up, I get very frustrated - it seems to respond well to cursing and threats.

Hey LB,
A couple of thoughts,
Right click "my computer"
click on "properties"
Next, click "Advanced"
Next, click "settings" under startup and recovery
Under system failure, make sure "Automatically restart" is unchecked.
Click OK
Restart


If that doesn't work,
Restart and start clicking F8 Or whatever is is on your machine to get to where you can chose to boot into
"normal" mode, safe mode, or whatever and use the arrow keys to select "Last Known Good Configuration"
Select that and hit enter.

If your computer is starting up at plug in and it keeps cycling through boot up? You have a Power supply and Possible a Mother broad issue.

If your computer is booting up at plug in and it works ok, then you have a bad power switch and possible Power Supply.

No, it's just when I shut it down, it stays off for all of about 40 seconds and then restarts. I found the event viewer and it looks like there's a program hanging up but who knows?. I was going to try what Wayne suggested but I didn't want to screw anything up.

I read this post and thought immediately of Hal - the computer from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Also, there was a movie about a computer that took over the house.

Okay, so last night it actually shut down -- and stayed that way. I'm not sure if it's fixed or just lulling me into a false sense of security.

If it was just a fluke, then I'll try what Wayne and Greg said but I'm not sure what I should expect to see, Wayne. I read somewhere on the internet that you might see a blue screen with errors and stuff. Will I be able to get back to Windows from there? And if it's bigger stuff like Greg says, then I have a very nice and capable tech guy who does repairs for me when I need them. We'll see what happens tonight.
