I think it was IdaMan who said he would like to see this discussed - so would I !
I have been investing for about 10 years through Edward Jones. Generally my returns have been between 8-10% per year. The commissions aren't bad and my broker is friendly but overall they are an extremely conservative firm.
I have no problem making 8% a year, however I'd like to look at getting involved in my own investments online. For example I wanted to buy shares in Google when it was 90$ a share, and my broker said it was too risky. I understand their mandate is to make steady growth in your portfolio but that got me thinking what if i went out and opened a small account on my own?????
Well guess what - I never did it !
I have never trusted myself enough to do it, and i've always felt there must be a dirt cheap site to do it offering better deals that 10$ a trade. Then i found http://www.zecco.com who offer free stock trades
So i think i'm ready to take the leap.
My plan was to do a few weeks of reading at Motley Fool at http://www.fool.com as they claim to offer "expert stock pick advice" and see if i can start small and earn some money trading on zecco.
Is there anyone on the site who does their own portfolio management online?? I'd be interested in seeing:
- how much work is really involved?
- how do you research stocks?
- how often do you buy/sell?
Also if you're not an online investor but get better than the 8-10% im getting through ed jones post that too!
